a clean, well-lighted place
shadows of leaves fleck the old man
a summer wedding,
confetti papering the sky
- the seagulls.
My skin maps
a battlefield -
insect assaults
early commute
trunk filled with flowers
on freshly cut lawn

almost midday
a rumbling reminder
that California
still remains
earthquake haven

over the fence

the evening breeze
and the odour
of barbecue coals and petrol

with burnt chicken
- or is it fish?
cleaning kitchen
Yuki* pounces on leaves
from flower cuttings

in the shade
of a slatted fence - cat
dreams of being a tiger

in the stifling heat
the night’s oppressive silence
broken by thumping
as my heart beats basso notes
in concert with bare longing

early commute-
lone peach rose
blooming on bush

mountain lake
the night air fills the loon's call

After the storm

tart with tears -
still hanging on limb
lemon with raindrops

sweltering evening
more wading pools in yards
than last few days

Morning Anomaly

Grey morning dampness

cool breeze on my face

creeping July sun

muffled hum of AC
dog days of summer
the cat and I napping
in front of the fan

Walking to work

shade for
shade-giver -
paper umbrella

red balloon -
gecko's throat
puffing up
through the window-
children laughing and splashing
beach ball bounces high

Sultry heat

rushes through morning chores:
mouldy strap

path of the prowler:
rose petals

birthday party
the shadow of a vulture
flits by
this ghostly summer
a thin sun shattered by storms
-another false dawn
after the rain-
weeds spring up shin high
in two days

staccato of rain
pounds the tin roof
the silence between
two estranged lovers
is deafening

Vic Gendrano

For a rainy day

each time
a woman cries
in the street
I want my coffee
without sugar

the rain has gone
will come again
will go
just like you

this champagne
was a gift from another girl
who told me
“save it
for a rainy day”

I know a story
that if you drink champagne
and want those bubbles
you add sugar

If you like your champagne
for more than a rainy day
leave a sugar spoon
with its handle hanging inside
just like your perfume is in me

mid day rain-
tiny rill full of leaves
rushes to run off
this strange July sun
washed and faded by the rain
is summer's shadow;
faint souvenir of another
when the sun and your smile were one

Seventh Inning

seventh inning
the drunk's jokes
become funny
midnight fox
through the puddled street:
his brush distorting the moon

Besides allergies
so many other complaints:
sudden weather change

today's gardening-
pulling weeds from flower pots
chatting with the rose bush

To silence, a thrush
Calls for her long-distant love
An endless solo

the morning heat comes
in a shroud of cloud today,
a summer in veil,
it spreads hidden and silent
like your caresses at dawn.

coming home at dawn
scarlet daylilly
greets me by the step
tired and running
like water
off a truck's back
