a clean, well-lighted place
shadows of leaves fleck the old man
a summer wedding,
confetti papering the sky
- the seagulls.
My skin maps

insect assaults
early commute

on freshly cut lawn

almost midday
a rumbling reminder
that California
still remains
earthquake haven

over the fence

the evening breeze
and the odour
of barbecue coals and petrol

mingling
with burnt chicken
- or is it fish?

in the shade
of a slatted fence - cat
dreams of being a tiger

in the stifling heat
the night’s oppressive silence
broken by thumping
as my heart beats basso notes
in concert with bare longing

early commute-
lone peach rose
blooming on bush

After the storm

tart with tears -
still hanging on limb

staccato of rain
pounds the tin roof
the silence between
two estranged lovers
is deafening

For a rainy day

each time
a woman cries
in the street
I want my coffee
without sugar

today
the rain has gone
will come again
will go
just like you

this champagne
was a gift from another girl
who told me
“save it
for a rainy day”

I know a story
that if you drink champagne
and want those bubbles
soft
you add sugar

If you like your champagne
for more than a rainy day
leave a sugar spoon
with its handle hanging inside
just like your perfume is in me

.
mid day rain-
tiny rill full of leaves
rushes to run off
this strange July sun
washed and faded by the rain
is summer's shadow;
faint souvenir of another
when the sun and your smile were one

Solo

To silence, a thrush
Calls for her long-distant love
An endless solo

the morning heat comes
in a shroud of cloud today,
a summer in veil,
it spreads hidden and silent
like your caresses at dawn.

greets me by the step
tired and running
